Merida is an absolutely amazing place, real estate-wise. Overlooked by tourists who crave the beach, it has become a mecca for American and European retirees, and those who are savvy enough to see the developing boom. Though the population is close to 1 million, the feel of the city is still intimate, and with every conceivable service, American franchise, and cultural amentities such as opera, theatre, symphony and museums...it's hard to find anything not to like about Merida. A large English-speaking community makes everyday communication easy for those who haven't yet mastered Spanish. And the warmth of the people is matched only by the weather. Whether you want to experience the "real" Mexico by staying close to the Centro and experiencing all the colors, sounds, sights and flavors of it's colonial old world charm...or you prefer to live a completely American lifestyle by shopping at WalMart, Costco and Home Depot, Merida offers something for everyone. Thousands of fantastic colonial gems are for sale at a bargain, and are just waiting to be rescued by those with some forsight and a desire to save their faded grandeur. The combination of lifestyle, architecture and balmy, tropical ambience makes Merida a truly one of a kind place in which to live and invest.

It is certainly good for real estate investors to consider real estate investments outside the United States. It seems like this could be a good opportunity for investors who are wary of the real estate market in the states. But one needs to understand that it is a global economy now,and although maybe Mexican real estate is doing well for now, what is happening in the world economy could eventualy affect the real estate market in Mexico.I would be very careful in investing in any kind of real estate as in we probably havn't seen the bottom yet in our market in the US and what happens here can have a big affect on our neighbors in Mexico. Also,if people have less disposeble income due to rising gas prices and other factors, they will have less to spend on taking vacations to exotic locales like Cancun.
