International Living recently had an interesting article about an individual who was able to purchase a 5 acre plot of residential land in the jungle area near Tulum that was just miles from the world famous Tulum beaches.

According to Pathfinder International, Mexico’s government is preparing for a major infrastructure upgrade to Mexico’s Riviera Maya and hopes to increase tourism to the Riviera Maya from 2.9 million visitors last year to over 18 million by 2025. From Pathfinder International:

Newspaper reports have revealed details of the much-awaited Riviera Maya airport plan in Tulum, including the date the project will be put out to tender.
A source at the Mexican Government’s Secretary for Communications and Transport (SCT) told Reuters news agency last week that November 9, 2009, “is the latest date” for publishing the terms of the auction, although other reports suggested a delay could still be possible.
The news is a “boost” for the Riviera Maya real estate market.

A 47,938 acre ecotourism project in Costa Maya, Quintana Roo, has been relaunched by the Mexican government. The development could have 28 miles of beach and generate 30,000 jobs near Mahahual on the Mexican Caribbean coast.

Plans for the new Riviera Maya international airport in Tulum are awaiting final approval from the Mexican Civil Aviation Authority, reported local newspaper, El Periodico de Quintana Roo.
Gina Patricia Ortíz Blanco, head of the Institute for Government Property (IPAE) in Quintana Roo, told the paper that ownership of 990 acres (400 hectares) of Tulum land has already been transferred to authorities.
She said that the zone is securely fenced off and ready for work on the airport to begin.

The company of Mexican businessman, Alfonso Romo, has beaten more than 20 other companies to win the contract to build a new highway bridge in Tulum on the Riviera Maya, said Mexican newspaper, El Semanario, last week.
The bridge forms another part of the major infrastructure investment taking place in the area, along with the new Riviera Maya international airport and fast coastal highway routes.
The paper said that Romo’s company Proyectos y Desarrollos de Infraestructura, the construction arm of Grupo PDI, won the contract for around $11.1 million.

Nothing – in the entire history of the universe – flies faster than awful rumors about private property being “taken” by the Mexican government. Such has recently been the case in the beautiful resort area around Tulum. Yes. Several hotels were closed down and may be demolished. However, the notion that the government of Mexico would send in the Army to take private property is totally unrealistic.
