The Mexican Government said last week that it will resume meetings to discuss the development of an ecotourism project on the Costa Maya, south of Tulum near Mahahual. Notimex news service reported that Gabriela Lima Laurents, delegate for the Environment and Natural Resources Secretary (Semarnat) said the meetings will start this month to discuss the project that will have 28 miles (45 km) of beach and could generate 30,000 jobs. Lima Laurents told the Mexican agency, "There are various spheres (of influence) involved and so the process is long - everyone must meet an agreement and respect the environment." She said the project would have an area of 47,938 acres (19,400 hectares) in the Municipality of Othón P. Blanco. 60 per cent of the land will be assigned specifically for ecological conservation and the project will involve private investors, 3 levels of government and environmental experts. Although the Mahauhaul cruise ship pier was damaged by Hurricane Dean in 2007, tourism in the area still continues to grow rapidly and offers many unique opportunities to see amazing wildlife next to white sand beaches and the Caribbean Sea. Like Tulum to the north, with each step down the path of development in tourism properties prices have increased and Costa Maya real estate offers some of the best investment opportunities on the Mexican Caribbean coast.
