I have been to Mazatlan, Cabo, Puerta Vallarta, and Cancun. Out of all of them, Mazatlan is by far the best to live in. It has much more history and culture (its own performing arts theater, a cathedral, historic district, etc.). It is also more authentic Mexican as opposed to the other stereotypical tourist towns.

The people are nicer and certainly more honest. (I was cheated and robbed 3 times in "Cabo" before we even left our hotel (Grand Regina)!!! Even the toll collector for the highway cheated me!!! Tough to believe that it was all coincidence. Adios Cabo!) I was NEVER

Perhaps the most attractive part of Mazatlan is the much lower cost of real estate and of living. It has a major medical center and is quitely developing resorts w/ golf courses and world class ammenities including one of the larges marinas on the Pacific Coast!! (Google it; I think its Marina Mazatlan. You will be impressed) There is world class fishing also but most Mexican resort areas offer that. It's just more affordable in Mazatlan. It also has the major store chains if that interests you.

One thing of note is that the really good beaches are found in the northern end (Nuevo Mazatlan) which is the tourist area (primarily American and Canadian). The other beaches are adequate; nothing to rave about. The good news is that Nuevo Mazatlan is spreading even further north WHERE THE BEACHES ARE UNTOUCHED, NATURAL AND BEAUTIFUL. Should that area be developed properly, it will be a secret gem. Close to the city for the necessities but far enough away for the peace and serenity.
