Mexico’s Water Troubles
The tropical climate of Mexico is not without its consequences, and one of those is the trouble with the water supply. The water supply is one of the main concerns of the Mexican government and rightfully so, since 12 million Mexicans are without water access at their home (1). In addition there is widespread contamination of the water supply with nearly three-quarters of the country’s natural water reserves being contaminated. (1) Mexico’s pollution, inadequate sewer system, and outdated piping are contributors to the problem.
Often tourists are advised to buy factory sealed bottled water to prevent being a casualty of water contamination. Water quality is something you definitely should take into account when exploring options for buying property in Mexico since illnesses from water dwelling pathogens are very unpleasant. One of the actions the government has taken is to establish Promagua, which provides federal subsidies to private investment in water infrastructure in hopes that outside investment will help improve conditions.
I surmise that the water quality varies widely depending on location. Some communities like Loreto Bay are planning to build their own desalination plant while other locations require you to resort to brushing your teeth with bottled water. Poor water quality can have a major impact on your life quality. Find Mexican real estate with high quality H20 and you will be good to go.
