Just in case it does... how do you feel about windsurfing and graffiti artists? But wait - maybe the combination of a sleepy little fishing village in Yucatan and graffiti artists, all grown up and world famous, might be just the ticket to your happily ever after. Welcome to the New and Improved Telchac Puerto, Yucatan! Once upon a time - not so very long ago - the new road stopped just to the east of Chicxulub with a line of big yellow barrels. A few miles farther east, down a bumpy road of rocks and holes, lay the tiny town of Telchac. Tourists and expats were not going to see the beautiful white beaches of Telchac because they were not going to go to the trouble of bumping down that old road. But times have changed and so has the highway! Now, Telchac is 45 minutes from Merida, with all of the orchestras, ballets, museums, and world class health care anybody could ever want, and for those who really just don't have a pioneering spirit, there is a big new Wal-Mart Bodega just 20 minutes away in Progreso. photo courtesy of Rigel Sauri And that isn't all... Telchac is near its own small pyramid named Xcambo. Telchac has an animal welfare association and is near many other volunteer opportunities in Chicxulub and Progreso. Water sports, such as kite-boarding and wind surfing are available nearby at Marina Silcer,  located in the old Merida Country Club in Chicxulub. Marina Silcer is owned by former Olympic Windsurfer Pedro Pablo Silveria. After hearing about so-called "certified retirement communities" in the States for the past few years, we decided to look at the criteria for getting on such a list, and found that Telchac Puerto fits the bill perfectly. In order to become certified as a retirement community in the States, the community must have a low cost of living, access to excellent health care, a mild climate, low taxes, friendly people, a unique culture, incredible natural beauty, an unbelievable wealth of recreational opportunities, and access to volunteer opportunities. This entire list of criteria could have been written about many of the major retirement destinations for expats in Mexico, and especially about the areas that are beginning to develop as old expat destinations grow outward from their traditional centers. Telchac Puerto, Yucatan, is a perfect example of a sleepy little fishing village that is rapidly growing into being a match for any"certified" retirement community in the world. photo courtesy of Rigel Sauri But the best part of living in Telchac Puerto is the activity going on now with the Telchac Mural Project. A young group of all grown up and (literally) world famous graffiti artists and a young, American photographer decided to see what would happen if they painted the town of Telchac... and what a magnificent job they are doing! Be sure to watch Patricia Boler's flickr slideshow: Telchac Mural Project and thumb through the flickr albums on Rigel Sauri's flickr site and then dream about retiring in a sleepy little Mexican fishing village that could not only rival any certified retirement community in the States, but that also thinks painting the town "a little bit different" is a fine idea! Real estate in Telchac Puerto, Yucatan, has become one of the best investments in all of Mexico. Hi Khaki:

My wife and I bought a villa in Telchac Puerto in 2007 and love it there. We hope to spend 4-5 months a year there when we retire. Thanks for your article.
